Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home

| Living | 08/12/2011

Even Bush says "Unplug"

Not only can you be a part of saving the world, by reducing your carbon footprint at home, you’ll also be doing your wallet a favor. While there are almost hundreds if not thousands of ways to reduce utility expenses, we’ve come up with some basic ideas you can implement right away. Are you ready for this?

Unplug what you can

Yes, that’s right. If its not turned on, it doesn’t mean it’s not sucking electricity from the socket. For gadgets you don’t use on a normal basis, pull the plug – televisions, coffee makers and grinders, computers, printers, etc…

Use the environment to your advantage

Instead of turning the fan on, open a couple windows to see if there is a draft. Open the curtains on sunny winter days and close them on sunny summer days. Look up and try difference solar/green technologies that can provide heating for your home and outdoor swimming pools.

Recycle, compost, and donate

Nearly everything at home can be recycled, composted, or donated. Here are just a couple of ideas:

  1. Recycle soda and water bottles
  2. Recycle bottles from the bathroom and kitchen (detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, etc…)
  3. Recycle plastic shopping bags
  4. Recycle paper and cardboard
  5. Recycle electronics such as computers, monitors, cell phones, televisions, etc…
  6. Compost kitchen scrap
  7. Compost yard waste
  8. Donate your old furniture
  9. Donate your books and music
  10. Donate your clothing and household items

Plastic Scrap Analysis - 2011 Price War

Plastic Scrap Market Analysis

Most Chinese businesses want to jump on the US bandwagon to search for plastic scrap they can trade or make money from. The magic formula seems to be to buy plastic scrap in the United States at low prices, export it to China, and make money. While many see the United States as an opportunity with open doors, I personally think that this window is becoming more narrow.

I say this because the United States is rapidly developing its own plastic scrap marketplace. Instead of shipping all plastic scrap into China for processing, most high quality, clean scrap is now being traded and sold locally at premium prices (at prices much higher than China). What gets exported is usually low in quality and or difficult and time consuming to separate and process.

Electronic Waste Sent to China Despite Ban

Hong Kong Electronic Waste 01

Yesterday, I had dinner at a Cantonese restaurant and while waiting for food to be served, I picked up an English newspaper, The Sunday Morning Post. After flipping through the first several pages, I stumbled across an article on electronic waste. I wanted to share this everyone here:

Potentially hazardous electronic waste is being exported to the mainland by operators of waste dumps in the New Territories just months after Beijing implemented a ban.

The mainland’s law was passed in 2008 but it has taken several years to implement. Despite the delay, the Hong Kong government has yet to figure out a sustainable approach to managing its own electronic waste.

BEWARE: Plastic Scrap Scammers

Plastic Scrap Scam

Plastic Scrap Jungle

I’ve been sitting here for about 5 minutes now thinking of the correct word or phrase to describe the plastic scrap market. To me, the plastic scrap market can be summed up into 5 words, “it’s a jungle out here”!

Recycled Plastic dot Com is a medium for trading plastic scrap worldwide, however, before getting into any deals, you need to use your head. If you are not comfortable with anything a buyer or seller says, stop and walk away. By the way, we are not responsible for the advertisements listed or the transactions you conduct!

Plastic Scrap Super Store Image

Plastic Scrap Master Plan

I came up with an interesting idea that may revolutionize the plastic scrap market once and for all. I wanted to share this idea with everyone here.

I think the correct name for this idea is “Plastic Scrap Super Store”. As in the name, the basic idea is to create a super store (like Wal-Mart) for plastic scrap. This is a place where suppliers around the world can ship their plastic scrap to sell direct to buyers in China.

Plastic Scrap Supplier Guide - Part 1

Suppliers of Plastic Scrap

It has not been long since the launch of Recycled Plastic dot Com and already I’m getting emails on a daily basis with questions about plastic, plastic recycling, and recycled plastics (which is great!). I’m having a blast answering your emails and meeting new people along the way. Several days ago, I received an email from Robbie asking how he can find plastic scrap suppliers in Europe. It seems I’ve been writing so much on selling that I’m neglecting the buying side of things. In response, I’m going to write an entire series on “finding plastic scrap suppliers” worldwide.

PP Recycled Plastic Pellets

You took the first step by placing your plastic products into the recycling bin. Have you ever wondered what happens to all your recycling efforts? Will the coke bottle you recycled yesterday get turned into a t-shirt? Ultimately, how is plastic recycled?

The recycling process is actually quite complicated! It involves a lot of sorting, cleaning, and melting before it can be reused. Let’s get started, shall we?

Recycling Plastic Bottles into Polyester Clothing [VIDEO]

Recycling Plastic Bottles into Polyester Clothing

Yesterday, I wrote an article about LiveProud, a company that markets recycled plastic sports wear. Today, I thought it would be great to show you exactly how PET plastic bottles are turned into polyester clothing. The process is quite troublesome therefore making recycled plastic products more expensive to produce.

The bottles are first collected through recycling centers, curbside pickups, drop-offs, and other means.

As more people realize the impact plastic waste has on the environment, more are jumping on the band wagon to marketing recycled plastic products. It’s really the perfect way of making a living and saving the environment all at once. After learning of the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” which is a large mass of plastic debris floating in the Pacific Ocean, Phil Tepfer and Charles Bogoian decided to create LiveProud, a company selling eco-friendly sports clothing in Boston, Massachusetts.

Oscars Goes Green – Recycled Plastic Red Carpet

Academy Awards Going Green

While I didn’t watch the 83rd Academy Awards yesterday (they didn’t broadcast it here), it’s intriguing to know that the famed “red carpet” from both the Grammys and the Oscars this year are made from recycled plastic bottles!

This and other eco-friendly practices were brought to you by Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (the NRDC) and now the director of Entertainment Greening Initiative. He was approached by the Academy in 2007 to develop sustainable practices for the broadcasts and surrounding events.
