The Plastic Burn Test is a method of quickly identifying plastic type by observing how plastic burns, its flame color, the smell, and more. Here is a video of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) burning.

Here are general burn properties of PET plastic:

  1. yellow flame
  2. slow flame
  3. does not ignite / self extinguishes
  4. little or no smoke
  5. plastic drips
  6. does not char

What does PET stand for?

PET stands for PolyEthylene Terephthalate and is sometimes referred to as PETE, PETP, or PET-P. PET is a thermoplastic polymer in the polyester family that is formed by combining two types of monomers together; ethylene glycol and purified terephthalic acid.
